In 2009 I was 8 months pregnant and living a happy little life in England when I received a phone call from my Mom to inform me that she had found a lump in her breast. After all the testing my Mom was informed it was just a cyst and that they would remove it. So off she went for surgery. During the surgery the surgeon had come to realize that this was not just a cyst and what she had was called D.C.I.S. Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (cancer in the milk ducts). Luckily at this point the cancer was still within the duct and hadn’t spread any further. Within a few months she had her breast removed and recovery went really well. The following year my Mom found another lump in her other breast Again they told her this was just a cyst but she opted to just have it removed without all the waiting of testing it. I am happy to say that my Mom has had success with the removal of both of her breast and no spread to any other part of her body. I can’t begin to tell anyone the anguish and pain both physically and mentally this caused her. She is a single woman and had to rely on her friends to care for her whilst I was still in the UK. It broke my heart that I could not be here to care for her. However, I am so thankful to have my Mom here and that she had amazing support from doctors, nurses, friends and cancer support groups. Without these people I don’t think she would have got through this.
Mom I am proud of you for staying as strong as you possibly could through this time and that you are here to watch your grandaughter grow up xxxx
